Who We Are

For over 75 years, we have been at the forefront of building a meaningful system of mental health care, strategically focused on eliminating social barriers and mental health discrimination.

Turn Hope
Into Help

One in five people lives with a mental illness, yet too many struggle in silence due to stigma and limited access to care.

We're changing that.

THERE IS NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote mental health as a critical component of overall wellness. We provide prevention services for all, offer early identification and intervention for those at risk, and deliver integrated care and treatment to those in need—with recovery as the goal.

We accomplish this through strength-based programs, education, advocacy, community partnerships, and the shaping of public policy.

Fight in the Open

Our Work

With over 15 free programs and services, we prioritize prevention, early intervention, and integrated care, working toward a society where all individuals are treated with dignity and have the opportunity to thrive, free from stigma and prejudice.

We envision a just, humane, and healthy society.

Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity to achieve their full potential—free from stigma, prejudice, and other barriers to care and recovery.

FIGHT IN THE OPEN

Clifford Beers and the Birth of Mental Health Advocacy

Clifford Beers’ journey into mental health advocacy began with his own lived experience. After suffering a series of personal tragedies, he was hospitalized in psychiatric institutions, where he witnessed and endured inhumane treatment. Determined to reform the system, Beers wrote A Mind That Found Itself (1908), an autobiographical account exposing the harsh realities of mental health care.

When advised to advocate anonymously, he refused, declaring, “I must fight in the open.” This conviction led him to establish Mental Health America in 1909, pioneering a movement to promote dignity, treatment, and rights for individuals with mental illness. His work laid the foundation for modern mental health advocacy, ensuring that no one would have to suffer in silence.
